The Expanse
Main title sequence / Seasons 1+2
Project —
Set hundreds of years in the future, The Expanse is a critically acclaimed hard sci-fi series where tensions between Earth, Mars, and the Belter population fuel a sprawling political and interplanetary thriller. As the series’ world expanded, so too did its visual language, and the title sequence played a key role in setting the tone and immersing viewers from the outset.
Produced by Breeder, the sequence was designed to reflect the vastness and fragility of space while grounding the sci-fi spectacle in realism and human detail. Breeder was the creator and ongoing custodian of the title sequence throughout all six seasons.
The opening sequence was selected as a finalist for the SXSW Excellence in Title Design (2016) and remains a celebrated example of sophisticated, story-driven motion design in genre television.
I worked as 3D Animation Lead, contributing across both 2D and 3D animation for the first two seasons. My focus included developing celestial simulations, planet transitions, and data-driven overlays, combining detailed modelling with cinematic camera moves and compositing. Working closely with the creative directors and the wider production team, we crafted a sequence that balanced scale and detail, conveying the political complexity and environmental vulnerability that define the show's narrative core.
